A struggling single father helps a beautiful whale trainer recover her will to live following a terrible accident that leaves her confined to a wheelchair. Lonely and destitute, Ali (Matthias Schoenaerts) leaves the north of France for his sister's house in Antibes after becoming the sole guardian of his estranged five-year-old son Sam. When Ali lands a job as a bouncer in a nearby nightclub, things quickly start to look up for the itinerant father and son. Then one night, after breaking up a fight in the club, Ali meets the radiant Stephanie (Marion Cotillard), and slips her his number after dropping her off safely at home. Though Stephanie's position on the high end of the social spectrum makes romance an unlikely prospect for the pair, a tragic accident at Marineland robs her of her legs, and finds her reaching out in desperation to Ali. Her spirit broken by the same tragedy that took her legs, Stephanie gradually finds the courage to go on living trough transcendent moments spent with Ali -- a man with precious little pity, but an enormous love of life. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Review For De rouille et d'os (Rust and Bone)

The movie wanders off course in the final act, as if none of its three screenwriters could quite figure out how to end it.
Connie Ogle-Miami Herald

"Rust" has some lovely scenes - Alain carrying Stephanie out to the sea - but it seems to wander off in search of something it already has, and in wandering, it loses its way.
Tom Long-Detroit News

"Rust and Bone" seems to wander unexpectedly into its heart; it feels organic in its casual unfolding, like life itself.
Moira MacDonald-Seattle Times

You couldn't ask for a more random relationship, but "Rust and Bone" slowly, almost magically, gives it meaning, symbolism, even a kind of symmetry.
Rafer Guzman-Newsday

The masterful writer-director Jacques Audiard draws vivid performances from Marion Cotillard and Matthias Schoenaerts for this gripping French romance about the body and the soul.
J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader

When Rust and Bone tells a story of a woman's recovery from a devastating injury, it hits all the right notes, traveling a path that is poignant without being mawkish and triumphant without being saccharine.
James Berardinelli-ReelViews

...while all the admittedly well-wrought details engage us on an intellectual level and keep us watching, the film doesn't linger in the imagination the way truly great cinema does
Philip Martin-Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

there is no denying the cinematic power of Audiard's fearless storytelling
Simon Weaving-Screenwize

Rust and Bone is a tough, emotionally raw movie, but its not a difficult watch, and its a very skillfully rendered piece of neo-realism.
Eric Melin-Scene-Stealers.com

The notion of strings-free sex gets a good working over from director Jacques Audiard (A Prophet), who takes as much pride in exploring the workings of Stephanie's troubled mind as he does in digitally removing her legs.
Jim Schembri-3AW

The film achieves what all dramatic films should strive for: complete audience empathy for the main characters. I cared for these two so deeply, and the many, many moments of quiet triumph gave me rushes of joy. A beautiful triumph of precision.
CJ Johnson-ABC Radio (Australia)

Rust and Bone is an unsentimentally lyrical triumph, unexpected in every way.
Rima Sabina Aouf-Concrete Playground

For a film that deals in different forms of agony it's rather pleasant. A portrait of family that's refreshing with the right emotional punch.
Cameron Williams-The Popcorn Junkie

Pulsates with life, romance, and bare-knuckle boxing
Robert Denerstein-Movie Habit

This multi-layered film with its characters tossed like flotsam on fate's giant, unpredictable waves drenches us in the intimate details of characters
Andrew L. Urban-Urban Cinefile

Two damaged souls find solace together in this gritty drama in which physical pain and disfigurement play a key role ... a stunningly delivered exposition
Louise Keller-Urban Cinefile

Audiard crafts a film with logical scenic construction yet surprising turns of events, with the drama never devolving into melodrama.
James Plath-Movie Metropolis

Rather like a persuasive pick-up artist, I'm not sure Rust & Bone is a film I'd want to spend a second night with, for fear of shattering the emotional illusion.
Catherine Bray-Film4

A 'Salt of the Earth' saga plumbing the depths of the human soul.
Kam Williams-AALBC.com

Through restraint, French director Jacques Audiard does a better job of tugging on viewers' hearts than most filmmakers can achieve with excess.
Dan Lybarger-KC Active

Filmmaking this self-indulgent screams "refund" in any language.
Rick Kisonak-Film Threat

In 'Rust and Bone,' Marion Cotillard loses both legs but retains her hotness. This might seem like an inappropriate observation, but it's very much to the point of this very physical French romance of redemptive suffering from director Jacques Audiard.
John Beifuss-Commercial Appeal (Memphis, TN)

This is a very different film to Audiard's most recent release - the impressive A Prophet - but it has a similar sense of maturity about it, and could well have acting awards aplenty heading its way in the coming months.
Martin Roberts-Fan The Fire

The strength of director Jacques Audiard's film is that he refuses to elicit pity from the audience for his protagonists.
Bob Bloom-Journal and Courier (Lafayette, IN)

Like a carnival barker or presidential candidate, Rust and Bone promises far more than it delivers.
Matt Brunson-Creative Loafing

Review For Fairhaven

Personal tenderness combines with a good sense of composition and a naturalistic storytelling style to give a small, familiar premise a nice lilt.
Lisa Schwarzbaum-Entertainment Weekly

The cliché-infested script ... is long on booze-filled confessions.
Lou Lumenick-New York Post

While there's something undeniably fascinating about the way "Fairhaven" repeatedly avoids predictable payoffs for portentous dramatic setups, narrative momentum is conspicuous by its absence.
Joe Leydon-Variety

[A] beautifully acted, directed and edited little slice of New England life ...
Stephen Holden-New York Times

O'Brien and his castmates seem to play loose with his script a bit more than they should in an effort to give the material a lived-in feeling.
Tom Russo-Boston Globe

It has a nuance and a rumpled comfort with itself, which turns "Fairhaven" into an inviting place to visit.
Joe Neumaier-New York Daily News

It's difficult to dislike Fairhaven, because it is a promising, earnest effort.
Tony Macklin-tonymacklin.net

Tom O'Brien smartly stresses realistic, submerged feelings instead of overwrought dramatics in his low-key portrait of friendship and all its complications.
Robert Levin-amNewYork

Great visuals, chemistry.
James Verniere-Boston Herald

"Not overwritten" can easily shade into "underwritten," which is the case with Fairhaven.
Noel Murray-AV Club

The film plays coy with its quintessential indie-dramedy setup, eschewing narrative and tension in favor of convivial character interplay and master shots of wintry landscapes.
Nick McCarthy-Slant Magazine

With Fairhaven, O'Brien makes an understated, confident entrée into feature filmmaking, mining male relationships to poignant effect in his ... debut.

If on one night every year, you could commit any crime without facing consequences, what would you do? In The Purge, a speculative thriller that follows one family over the course of a single night, four people will be tested to see how far they will go to protect themselves when the vicious outside world breaks into their home. In an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity-including murder-becomes legal. The police can't be called. Hospitals suspend help. It's one night when the citizenry regulates itself without thought of punishment. On this night plagued by violence and an epidemic of crime, one family wrestles with the decision of who they will become when a stranger comes knocking. When an intruder breaks into James Sandin's (Ethan Hawke) gated community during the yearly lockdown, he begins a sequence of events that threatens to tear a family apart. Now, it is up to James, his wife, Mary (Lena Headey), and their kids to make it through the night without turning into the monsters from whom they hide. Directed by James DeMonaco (writer of Assault on Precinct 13 and The Negotiator), The Purge is produced by Jason Blum of Blumhouse (Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Sinister), Platinum Dunes' partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form (The Amityville Horror, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre), as well as Sébastien Kurt Lemercier (Assault on Precinct 13).(c) Universal

Review For The Purge

The film's would-be subversive ideas about the kneejerk appeal of social violence get lost in the mix.
Nigel Floyd-Time Out

The flip into action mode for the final act is slightly incongruous but mirrors the audiences own desire for release, revenge and bloodshed.
Henry Northmore-The List

For all its silliness, The Purge is a pretty decent suspenser, effectively shot in semi-darkness in a confined setting.
Russell Lewin-SFX Magazine

A home-invasion thriller with a twist, this fiercely clever film is both thought-provoking and terrifying, mixing a Twilight Zone sense of morality with skilfully developed menace and genuinely horrific violence.
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

A slice of low-budget, high-concept sci-fi, a passionate, if somewhat pulpy, homage to paranoid classics such as The Stepford Wives.
Charlotte O'Sullivan-This is London

In American suburbia you are never safe, least of all when you think you are. Keep your friends close and your fellow 'burb-dwellers closer.
Nigel Andrews-Financial Times

it is not long before the film's high concept is beleaguered by an aggressive incursion of standard genre plotting
Anton Bitel-Grolsch Film Works

It's clever in the way it takes some disagreeable elements from our own time - fear of racial minorities, envy of wealth, needless aggression and gun crime - slightly exaggerates them and projects them into the near future.
Christopher Tookey-Daily Mail [UK]

The film doesn't develop its one good idea so much as stumble around in the dark with it for 85 minutes, crashing noisily into the furniture.
Mike McCahill-Guardian [UK]

James DeMonaco's blood-splattered thriller begins well before expiring slowly from multiple improbabilities.
Neil Smith-Total Film

Asks us to look anew - and askance - at conventions of cinematic horror while also engaging in startling satire of America's culture of violence.
MaryAnn Johanson-Flick Filosopher

The film has a strong whiff of Twilight Zone moralising to it, but it's also genuinely unsettling and often downright terrifying.
Rich Cline-Shadows on the Wall

The desire to Say Something through the megaphone of a suspense flick may be laudable on paper, but The Purge deafens us with too much ugly static to make any audible point.
Tim Robey-Daily Telegraph

Engaging, nail-bitingly tense thriller with an intriguing premise, a strong script and terrific performances from a superb cast ...
Matthew Turner-ViewLondon

DeMonaco's script begins to run out of steam ... but there's a deliciously nasty sting in the tail, just when it seems the film is poised to draw breath.
Damon Smith-Birmingham Post

In the end, 'The Purge' has a plethora of brilliant ideas that are all underdeveloped. And with that comes an insanely unfocused, diluted and generic thriller that carries zero impact.
Brad Miska-Bloody Disgusting

Snicker all you want at this dopey picture, but instead of being another pointless slasher, it at least makes an attempt at some interesting discourse.
Jordan Hoffman-ScreenCrush

Logic and drama are what get purged here.

Review For Evil Dead

Despite much old-school splatter, it's seldom frightening and oddly unfunny.
Nigel Floyd-Time Out

An effectively relentless gore-fest.
Bruce Diones-New Yorker

Five years from now, will you want to watch this bloody $14 million extravaganza or Raimi's shoestring original, which was Amateur Hour elevated to pop art? Evil Dead just bleeds money.
David Edelstein-Vulture

A stylish and worthy homage: inventive even as it is derivative, never quite jokey but never taking itself too seriously, and clocking in at an entirely appropriate 91 minutes. Any longer would be unmerciful; any shorter, ungenerous.
Christopher Orr-The Atlantic

Though it never channels the raw DIY energy of the original Evil Dead series -- what big-budget version could? -- this polished, clever remake remains true to the spirit of the original, which was at once viscerally terrifying and weirdly lighthearted.
Dana Stevens-Slate

A gore fest that's just effective enough to whet fans' appetite for a sequel, even as it kills everyone else's appetite for dinner.
Michael O'Sullivan-Washington Post

Alvarez doesn't succeed in making Evil Dead terrifying, but he does make it as prodigiously intense and gory for our time as the original was for its own.
Margot Harrison-Seven Days

A spookily effective remake of the ultra-low budget 1981 cult horror classic by Sam Raimi, the gore and blood is so plentiful here it even falls from the sky...A must for fans, Evil Dead also affirms horror as the most remake-friendly genre going.
Jim Schembri-3AW

Fernandez's film falls most flat, as Raimi's Dead pics are full of comedy, whether Three-Stooges-indebted or just plain black and gross-out, while this rethink is monotonously serious - and really a bit evilly dull at times.
David 'Mad Dog' Bradley-Rip It Up

I will always appreciate a horror flick that introduces novel and inventive ways to dispatch of its cast. But the frights are almost totally absent. So what are we even doing here?
Simon Miraudo-Quickflix

Alvarez seems to know where to pay tribute to the original... but he also knows where to depart... Overall, his new movie packs a punch.
Jeffrey M. Anderson-Common Sense Media

... not for people prone to nightmares. It's highly effective as causing involuntary chills and hand movements (as in, up to eyes to block the bloody chaos onscreen). ... a cut above just about any other modern horror/slasher remake
Matt Kelemen-AspectRatio.us

If Hollywood is having trouble with deciding who its 'war and terror' enemies are, that's nothing compared with its crisis in horror.
Graham Young-Birmingham Mail

All the requisite blood and gits but not much else to offer by way of entertainment.
Jackie K. Cooper-jackiekcooper.com

The result is something less than the sum of its parts; in other words, the diametric opposite of that beloved original.
Ed Whitfield-The Ooh Tray

There's more slickness than imagination on display.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

Using the very latest Cern-tested atom interferometry, we can reveal that Evil Dead is precisely, exactly - in the coldest atomic terms -the film that you were expecting.
Tara Brady-Irish Times

Remaking an iconic classic is dangerous business, even if the original filmmakers are on board as producers, but at least Uruguayan writer-director Alvarez has a few clever ideas up his sleeve.
Rich Cline-Contactmusic.com

Happy days for those who love this sort of thing. But Raimi's effort, perhaps because we hadn't seen the plot before, was infinitely more scary.
Derek Malcolm-This is London

This could easily have been the best demon possession film released in decades. Instead it is just a very effective, still-terrifying, evil retread.
Matt Looker-TheShiznit.co.uk

There's no suspense, and it isn't scary.
Christopher Tookey-Daily Mail [UK]

The characters are forgettable but the horror they suffer lingers in the memory, for good or ill.
Henry Fitzherbert-Daily Express

A decent, gory horror treat for those who've never watched an Evil Dead movie - while at the same time exhibiting discreet respect for the 1980s incarnations, with plenty of low-key nods to the original for fans.
Catherine Bray-Film4

A full-bloodedly grisly and macabre film that zaps over a few scares.
Peter Bradshaw-Guardian [UK]

Anonymous, forgettable and doesn't hold a candle to the brilliant original.
David Jenkins-Little White Lies

I was left clamping my hand to my open jaw, not so much in terror, more in shocked hilarity at how grand the guignol was willing to go.
Tim Robey-Daily Telegraph

Review For Mud

There is an enchanted-fairy-tale aspect to Mud, but its bright, calm surface only barely disguises a strong, churning undercurrent.
Adam Nayman-Globe and Mail

A modern fairy tale, steeped in the sleepy Mississippi lore of Twain and similar American writers, and with a heart as big as the river is wide.
-Toronto Star

Nichols has a strong feeling for the tactility of natural elements-water, wood, terrain, weather.
David Denby-New Yorker

Nichols takes his time with the story, dwelling on how the boy is shaped by the killer's tragic sense of romance, yet the suspense holds.
J. R. Jones-Chicago Reader

"Mud" isn't just a movie. It's the firm confirmation of a career.
Stephen Whitty-Newark Star-Ledger

"Mud" unfolds at its own pace, revealing its story in slivers. The performances are outstanding, especially from Sheridan, who plays tough, sweet, vulnerable and confused with equal conviction.
Adam Graham-Detroit News

This is American cinema at its very best as Huckleberry Finn meets Stand By Me.The two boys are terrific and McConaughey is sensational as Mud, dazzlingly frazzled as the hunted and haunted man on the run.
Brian Henry Martin-UTV

Up till just past the three-quarter mark, Mud is one heck of a nifty psychological fable.
Tim Brayton-Antagony & Ecstasy

The Southern-fried drama "Mud" is an electrifying example of what happens when you merge a crackerjack yarn with a very specific setting, and then pour on the heat with riveting performances.
Sean Means-Salt Lake Tribune

McConaughey and Sheridan 's acting skills, as well as those of the entire supporting cast, make this movie better than it ought to be.
Jackie K. Cooper-jackiekcooper.com

It gets under our skin because Nichols gives us time to come to know Mud's island like the places we knew as children.
Margot Harrison-Seven Days

As Mud might say, it's a hell of a thing.
Ed Whitfield-The Ooh Tray

The boys are so skillfully played that Mud also plays like cinema verite. Nichols' fluid camerawork suggests a documentary-style approach. That helps these young lads transform into flesh-and-blood characters who get our attention and support.
Bruce Kirkland-Jam! Movies

Sheridan, who played the Terrence Malick surrogate in The Tree Of Life, is terrific at conveying adolescent confusion with tiny squints and frowns, and McConaughey plays off him masterfully.
Norman Wilner-NOW Toronto

Carefully crafting films that fly just below the political radar, director-writer Jeff Nichols is slowly, but surely, reweaving the fabric of the American dream.
Katherine Monk-Canada.com

It's totally worth it to pay good money to see a good, little film nestled between theaters showing 'Iron Man 3' and 'The Great Gatsby.' (Complete Content Details for Parents also available)
Teddy Durgin-Screen It!

This is a junior adventure story echoing Huckleberry Finn and Stand By Me, a tale which is in no hurry to unfold, but beautifully done, exquisitely performed, and filled with terror and wonder.
Trevor Johnston-Radio Times

Beautifully acted, intellectually engaging, and dramatically satisfying, Mud deserves to rocket to the top of your must-see list.
Mike McGranaghan-Aisle Seat

Nichols is a gifted writer-director who knows how to get into the heads of his characters. And this film has superior actors who create people who are intriguing and hugely involving.
Rich Cline-Shadows on the Wall

'Mud' is a standout film in this 'coming of age' genre mainly because of its central character, one tough, warm-hearted, stubborn little kid who believes in the power of love, above all else.
Robert Roten-Laramie Movie Scope

Other than pacing problems that needlessly stretch the film past the two-hour mark, 'Mud' slings the dirt and sweat with the best of them, as it both mourns and celebrates a way of life that's all but disappeared.
Al Alexander-The Patriot Ledger

A sublime coming-of-age film, 'Mud' would be the offspring if 'Stand By Me' and 'Cape Fear' reproduced.
Linda Cook-Quad City Times (Davenport, IA)

Mud is a movie of striking performances and memorable images and of people who seem to belong in rather than being imposed upon their environment.
Philip French-Observer [UK]

A brilliant metaphor for how a child deals with divorce.

Review For Venus And Serena

Does the film pull back the curtain on who they are and what drives them? Not so much.
Loren King-Boston Globe

How much new does Venus and Serena have to tell us? Not enough.
Dan DeLuca-Philadelphia Inquirer

An engaging, warts-and-all look at the Williams sisters.
Alissa Simon-Variety

The film works better as a thrilling but superficial celebration of two incredible athletes instead of a personal portrait of two world-famous women who continue to make sports history.

Fans probably won't learn much they don't already know, but the film covers enough ground to feel like the movie equivalent of one of those lengthy, in-depth articles you used to get in the magazine of your Sunday newspaper.
